 The Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 between the British Crown and various Māori chiefs, established British law while promising to protect Māori rights, although its implementation led to numerous conflicts and land disputes. New Zealand Island evolved into a self-governing colony by the late 19th century and gained full independence in 1947.
